"Dunan Unification War"

"In 460(solar calendar), an alliance of cities known as the City-State of
Jowston broke a ceasefire agreement without warning, and annihilated the
Highland Youth Army. In response, Prince Luca Blight of Highland invaded
Toto and Ryube villages, spawning the Dunan Unification War. Jowston
leaders sought more cooperation among cities, but were denied even as
Highland killed Mayor Annabel and captured her city, Muse, the most
important of Jowston cities. Total Highland victory was certain until the
remnants of the State Army joined with mercaneries at North Window Castle
to organize a new resistance movement against Prince Blight.

These new allied forces were led by the son of the hero Genkaku, who
had saved Jowston in the past. The new allied forces endured Highland
attacks and succeeded in rescuing Greenhill City mayor Teresa Wisemail.
After Matilda Knightdom dismissed a request for military help; half of its
knights defected to join the new allied forces. With their numbers augmented,
they launched a challenge against Highland, which was now completely
controlled by Luca Blight as emperor, due to the sudden death of his father,
Agares. Despite Highland's numerical superiority, its army was unable to
deliver a decisive blow against the allies led by Shu, a clever tactician.
Emperor Blight chose to sneak-attack the heart of the allied forces. The plan
was discovered in advance, however, and the allied forces waited patiently
for Blight's ambush.

Under a full moon, the slaughter was reversed, with the attackers
not even realizing they'd been surrounded. Emperor Luca's death passed the
throng to Princess Jilla's husband of 17 years, Jowy Blight. Inspired by the
ambush, the allied forces liberated Tinto City and Greenhill City. They went
on to capture the Matilda Knightdom's stronghold, Rockaxe Castle, and then
turned their attention to the Highland imperial capital, L'Renouille.
Nearly everyone defending the capital died. Emperor Jowy Blight was last
seen during the torching of the city. The Highland Kingdom was no more, and
the royal Blight family legacy came to an end."

"The Legend of the Flame Champion"

"Many years ago, over half of the Grasslands were controlled by the Holy
Harmonian Kingdom. Most clans fell under their control. Even clans not
controlled paid tribute. No one questioned this, for the Harmonian army
was almighty. One battalion alone was equal in strength to all clans
combined."

"The difference in power was enormous, yet one group showed no fear: the
Flame Champion and his Fire Bringers."

"Their battles were small, but word spread quickly. Stories of the Fire

There are also some playthrough videos of the game in Youtube. The only problem is that it has no English subtitles. You'll surely have a hard time figuring out the whole story.

In my own opinion, I think the introduction movie of Suikoden 5 is lacking. It could have been better if they made it a little dramatic. The good thing about it, on the other hand, is the background music. Also, not to mention the story of the whole game-- it's fantastic! I just love it.

"Dragon horses are native to the southwest of Falena. Although they look
fearsome, they are actually gentle and intelligent creatures."

"Due to these creatures' friendly, docile nature, those who lived nearby
began to live in cooperation and harmony with the dragon horses, eventually
forming a communal society together."

"This communal society was the origin of the Dragon Cavalry. At first, these
Dragon-Horse People were considered "barbaric nomads" too savage to submit
to the Queen's control, and were persecuted just like Raftfleet. The Queendom
made it a priority to subjugate the Dragon-Horse People."

"With the great mobility of dragon horses as their weapon, however, the
Dragon-Horse People would not easily nor quietly yield. They fiercely defended
their lands against the Queendom's incursions for years. At one time, the area
around present-day Port Spinacks and southward was virtually their own
independent territory, as the Queendom was unable to gain a foothold in the
region."

"But this antagonistic relationship underwent a sudden and dramatic shift, all
due to the founding of Nagarea. Nagarea was a violent theocracy, formed by
integrating a group of small nations in the south. Wanting to further expand
its power, Nagarea sent an 'armed missionary group' into Falena."

"In reality, though, these 'missionaries' were no more than an invading army.
Suddenly faced with a common enemy, the Dragon-Horse People and the Queendom's
Army fought alongside one another, with the partnership becoming closer as the
conflict raged on."

"Dragon horses only lay their eggs in a single cave on the banks of the
Feitas River. In cases where they've been forced to lay elsewhere, the eggs
have gone dormant, mysteriously unable to hatch."

"Thus, if forced to flee elsewhere, the dragon horse population would be
unable to sustain itself. According to the dogma of the Nagarist Order, dragon
horses are evil and wicked creatures that must be 'cleansed' from this world.
If Nagarea were somehow able to invade the lands of the Dragon-Horse People,
it would surely have meant the slaughter of the entire dragon horse
population."

"And so the Dragon-Horse People fought all the more desperately. The
Commander of the Queen's Knights believed that the Dragon-Horse People were
equal citizens of Falena."

And they defended the dragon horse lair to the very end."

defeat of the Nagarist invasion, but the strong sense of solidarity that

The Dragon-Horse People, too, felt deeply indebted to the Queendom's Army

the Queendom whenever it was in trouble, with dragon horses and swords at
the ready. Thus, the Feitas Dragon Cavalry was born. However, early on, the
power, justice, and might of the Dragon Cavalry would be greatly abused. The
Senators, constantly involved in vicious power struggles, were selfishly bent
on winning the Dragon Cavalry over to their own factions. This kind of
intrigue and subterfuge was alien to the simple Dragon-Horse People."

"Unable to deal with the devious plots and stratagems typical of courtiers,
they were often manipulated and used as little more than the Senators' pawns
and private soldiers."

"The Dragon Cavalry, tired of being used as pawns in a political game,
decided to impose a strict rule upon themselves.
They decided that their own priority should be to defend Falena's borders.
They vowed to never let themselves get involved in Falena's internal
disputes."

"The Sun Palace, which had also been uncomfortable with the Senators'
behaviour, officially gave its approval to this rule, too."

"Since divorcing themselves from internal politics, the Dragon Cavalry has
served as a high-profile border patrol against barbarian invaders, earning
them the grateful respect and trust of the Falenan citizenry."

"During the Great Earthquake of 164 of the New Capital Calendar, the land
route that connected Falena and Nagarea was destroyed beyond repair.
Thus, the once-terrifying Nagarist threat has become far less serious."

"However, today, with the ominous rise of Armes to the east, the Dragon
Cavalry's importance to the Queendom of Falena remains as high as it ever
has."

"The Feitas Dragon Cavalry is governed by a strict set of regulations.
These rules, and the regimented, disciplined behaviour they inspire in the
cavalry, are a source of great pride for Falena."

to be a little pigheaded at times. The best example of this is their
prohibition against women joining the Dragon Cavalry."

"While it's true that women didn't ride dragon horses among the ancestors
of the Dragon Cavalry in the dragon horse village, that was only a custom.
It was never defined as a hard-and-fast rule."

"In fact, the Dragon Cavalry was simply following the conventions of the
Queendom at the time."

"Back then, membership in the Queen's Knights was restricted to men only,
so the Dragon Cavalry simply followed that tradition."

"Later on, women were finally allowed to be appointed to the Queen's

"The Art of One-on-One Duels"

"If your opponent "Guards", the only way to wound him is with an "Attack."
You won't produce dramatic results with just one "Attack," but a steady
barrage should eventually lead you to victory."

opportunity to hit him with your "Special" move.
Conversely, if your opponent goes for a "Special" move, it's vital that you
stay calm and take up a defensive "Guard" stance. You can fend off your

"Archers are formidable against the lightly-armored cavalry. However, their
attacks are ineffective against infantry units, which are excellent at
defending arrow attacks."

"Combat ships transport a large number of infantry ready to transfer to
enemy ships for hand-to-hand combat. However, because the soldies on deck
are defenseless, combat ships are vulnerable to archer attack."

"Ships specialized in ramming attacks on other ships are called "rams."

to a minimum, and many benefits may be reaped as well."

2. Lure the Enemy Away
"If complete destruction of the main enemy force is your goal, eliminate the
enemies surrounding that main force. Identify as many of the enemy units
that surround the main force as you can, lure them away one by one, and
destroy them."

3. Don't Pursue the Enemy Too Far
"If you make too deep an incursion into enemy territory, enemy units might
surround you and you'll be unable to retreat. Any unit, no matter how strong,
is likely to get wiped out in the face of overwhelming firepower."

4. Destroy Enemiy Units Completely
"An enemy unit might sometimes possess valuable equipment or precious items.
In order to obtain these, you must destroy that unit completely. These war
trophies can help you in future battles, too."

only Shinatsu, the head of the intelligence division, acquiesced.
Hinoyagi, the head of the subversive activities division, put up heavy
resistance to the order."

committing suicide just before he could be captured."

"Rumor has it that Kayanu, the head of the assassin training division, and
Takefute, the head of the assassin division and overall supreme commander
of Nether Gate, fled to Nagarea."

"The Ancient Armes Dynasty"

"Long, long ago-- indeed, even hundreds of years before the arrival of the
legendary Sindar race, a mighty dynastic nation held power in this land. That
nation was the Ancient Armes Dynasty."

"Blessed by the Sun Rune, the dynasty was prosperous beyond compare.
Its vast territory stretched across what is now known as the Queendom of
Falena, the New Armes Kingdom and Nagarea. One fateful day, however,
the King suddenly and inexplicably went insane."

"His madness caused the Sun Rune to go berserk, destroying everything in
its path. The magnificent Armes Dynasty, the pinnacle of civilization, was
gone in an instant. In its place lay only dry and barren wilderness."

"Some theorize that the capital of this dynasty was near Amdort Mountain, in
the center of the present-day Queendom of Falena. However, no trace of the
civilization remains. However, it's safe to say that if the Sun Rune indeed
burned all vestiges of the capital to the ground, then there should be no
remains to discover. Although the people of the modern-day New Armes Kingdom
claim to be descendants of the Ancient Armes Dynasty, there is no proof that
they have any racial or cultural relationship to the dynasty whatsoever."

"The New Armes Kingdom's claims are likely just nationalistic propaganda,
aimed at building itself up into a nation as great as the Ancient Armes
Dynasty once was. Since most people now identify the name "Armes" with the
New Armes Kingdom, the true Ancient Armes Dynasty is usually just referred
to as "The Ancient Dynasty" or "The Ancient Nation."

"Royal Family Succession Conflict"

"This tragedy started under the reign of Queen Olhazeta, in the late 210s of
the New Capital Calendar. Princess Falzrahm, second in line to the throne,
began maneuvering to win over the majority of the Senate, wanting her sister,
Princess Shahrewar, to give up her right of succession and take it for
herself."

"Rumor has it that the Barows family was the real force behind all this
scheming, as they had married one of their members to Princess Falzrahm."

"Because both Queen Olhazeta's and Princess Shahrewar's husbands were from
the Godwin family, the Barows family became terrified of the possibility of
losing their influence in the Senate and royal family."

"Thus, they would use Princess Falzrahm in an attempt to seize the right of
succession. It is unclear as to whether all-- or even some-- of these rumors
surrounding the Barows Family are true."

"Regardless of the Barows family's ambitions, however, it does appear that
Princess Falzrah herself really did have designs on the throne."

"The situation quickly grew antagonistic between the Godwin and Barows
families, each of whom supported one of the two princesses, and even the
aristocracy that supported the two families got mixed up in the hostilities.
Queen Olhazeta, once known for her brilliance and decisiveness, was getting
old, and she no longer had the strength to resolve the situation."

"Armed forces was never officially used, but a cold war raged between the two
factions, one that used every conceivable form of subterfuge.
And what could be considered the culmination of this secret strife was the
Sacred Games of Princess Arshtat. Even though Princess Shahrewar's daughter,
Haswar, was older than Arshtat and therefore had a higher priority of
succession..."

"Princess Falzrahm and Lord Barows tenaciously persuaded Queen Olhazeta into
letting them hold the Sacred Games for their own oldest child, Arshtat, before
Haswar's Sacred Games. This was, of course, a strategy of Princess Falzrahm's
to lend credibility to the idea that she herself was the predominant
successor."

"But, amazingly, the one who won Princess Arshtat's hand in marriage at these
Sacred Games was a barbaric swordsman from a foreign land."

"If either the Barows or the Godwin family had won, the possibility of a rise
to arms had been expected. This outcome, then, ironically, led to a cooling
down of the antagonism between the two factions."

"But that peace only lasted until 226, when Queen Olhazeta passed away. With
the prospect of the actual throne so close at hand, antagonism was rekindled
even before the mourning period for the Queen was over."

"And that antagonism turned instantaneously into a bloody struggle."

"And throughout this struggle, Nether Gate's nefarious influence was the
cause of most of the bloodshed. Nether Gate is usually under the direct
control of the Queen, but the throne was vacant during this time."

"And so Nether Gate played both sides, executing assassinations for both
Princess Shahrewar's and Princess Falzrahm's factions.
Nether Gate's ultimate goal was to cling to power no matter which side
acceded to the throne. In the end, though, their actions brought unprecedented
bloodshed to the Sun Palace."

"This war of succession saw countless victims, as many from both the Godwin
and Barows factions were slain. In the end, even the husbands of the two
Princesses themselves were assassinated."

"Not wanting to see any more bloodshed, Princess Shahrewar-- not having a
very strong personality by nature-- lost the will to fight and gave up the
throne to her younger sister."

"But Princess Falzrahm had become suspicious of anything and everything. She
thought that even this noble gesture of Princess Shahrewar's might be a trick.
Thus, she ordered Nether Gate to assassinate her older sister."

"After acceding to the throne at last, Queen Falzrahm died of illness only
two short years later. After all the bloodshed that had occured, this ending
was hardly dramatic. These years of internal conflict and intrigue have left
a brutal scar on the Queendom of Falena. This scar will not easily-- nor
quickly-- heal."

"But the Princesses Arshtat, Sialeeds and Haswar are determined to never
repeat their mother's mistakes. Many feel that this will certainly be the
Queendom's salvation."

"Prince Floods Out Foes"

The Prince had to flee his own castle and literally go 'underground,'
but recently was able to return safely. First, he managed to secure
the services of the Feitas Dragon Cavalry. Then, in an ingenious plan,
the enemy occupation met a swift and speedy end.

The Prince closed the sluice gate that controls the water level of
Ceras Lake. In the ensuing flood, the enemy forces that had been
occupying his Ceras Lake Castle were forced to evacuate. With His Royal
Highness recapturing his base of operations, things are looking up
for the first time in a long while.

"Godwin-Dragon Cavalry Blackmail Plot"

''The Dawn Times'' has uncovered the truth behind the Dragon Cavalry's
recent refusal to repel the Armes invasion. It turns out that the
Godwin's took dragon horse foals and eggs as hostages, threatening to
slaughter them if Sauronix Castle did not agree to complete silence
and compliance.

''The Dawn Times'' has learned that it was none other than His Royal
Highness the Prince who uncovered this malevolent consipiracy. The
Dragon Cavalry is said to have sworn vengeance on the Godwins for
their reprehensible act.

"Armes Western Marine Corps Goes Home"

The Godwin Army and Southern Mountain Corps' defeat at Ceras Lake
Castle has apparently convinced the Western Marine Corps, which
had been occupying Estrise, to withdraw to its native Armes without
incident. Despite a long period of occupation, Estrise appears to
have suffered little damage.

With its return home, the Western Marine Corps has essentially
deserted the Southern Mountain Corps, who still occupy Sable.
However, the Valya Family, the head of the Western Marine Corps,
has always been known as a moderate Armes faction.

In fact, ''The Dawn Times'' has learned that the Western Marine Corps
may have not been dispatched for fighting purposes at all. Sources
say they were sent only to keep the more hard-line Southern
Mountain Corps in check, preventing the wholesale slaughter of
major Falenan cities.

Issue 17
"Doraat and Sable Recaptured"

The Prince's forces have recaptured Doraat and Sable in two separate,
spectacular military triumphs. After the valiant defense of his Castle,
the Prince dispatched units to pursue the fleeing enemy. The main force
of the Godwin Army holed themselves up in Doraat, where they were
defeated.

Meanwhile, the Armes Southern Mountain Corps fled to Sable, where they
were intercepted by the Prince's forces and repelled. With these two
victories, the Loyalist Army has succeeded in regaining the territory
originally lost in the shocking Armes invasion.

''The Dawn Times'' has confirmed that General Bahram Luger, Commander
of the Godwin Navy, and General Jidan Guisu of the Armes Southern
Mountain Corps, both perished during these recent skirmishes.

"Prince repels Southern Mountain Corps"

Leading the pursuit of the Armes Southern Mountain Corps, His Royal
Highness and General Dinn stormed into Sable. They defeated the enemy
General, Jidan Guisu, and completely expelled the Armes forces, finally
liberating Sable from the iron fist of Armes.

According to information gleaned from the battlefield, part of the
reason for the Armes collapse is due to the traitorous actions of
Southern Mountain Corps Commander Maha Sparna, who secretly fled
back to her native Armes while Guisu was engaged in the defensive.

Furthermore, Sparna even demolished Sable's southern gate, creating
a blockade so that the Prince couldn't pursue her. As a result, Guisu
and his men were boxed into Sable, forced to fight to the death.
After stabbing her own men in the back, Sparna will surely not be
welcomed back with open arms in Armes.

Maha Sparna, the great Commander of the Armes Southern Mountain Corps,
cowardly deserted Jidan Guisu in an attempt to save her own skin. But
after all the trouble she went through to escape back to Armes, her
country apparently didn't give her a very warm welcome.

The nation of Armes is an alliance of five major clans, and the
Sparna family is a prestigious member of the Darja Clan, one of these
five.

The recent invasion of Falena came about because of collusion
between the Darja Clan and the Godwin faction. However,
even from the very beginning, there were apparently many who feared
that an invasion would be imprudent.

Even King Jalat himself could not have been called enthusiastic
about the idea. And when the invasion ended in failure, the Darja
Clan turned on Maha, making her a scapegoat for the entire Armes
defeat.

This means that after being used by the Godwin faction and betraying
General Jidan, Maha was betrayed by her own clan as well. Due to her
selfish actions on the battlefield, 'Portraits of the Enemy'
cannot say that her ultimate fate is undeserved.

The ultimate outcome of the Armes invasion, then, may well be a
positive one. The military failure has greatly weakened the hard-line
Darja Clan's position within the country. Wanting to avoid future
conflict, the more moderate Ishvaak and Madra Clans have taken
over leadership.

Issue 18
"Godwins' Stronghold Collapses"

The Loyalist Army recently pushed its troops into Stormfist, the Godwin
faction's stronghold and, after a fierce engagement, succeeded in
capturing the town. A group of former gladiators joined forces with the
Prince's forces, contributing significantly to the victory.

Lord Godwin and the main force had already moved to Sol-Falena, so the
capture of Stormfist doesn't mean an end to the war. But General Novum
and Childerich both died during this battle so, combined with the
loss of their castle, the Godwin faction has been dealt a heavy blow
indeed.

"Sialeeds with Twilight Rune?"

During the recent siege of Stormfist, the Godwin faction once again
showed its desperation by using the Twilight Rune. This time, however,
it was in the hands of the Prince's aunt Sialeeds, not Queen's Knight
Alenia, and its power was noticeably stronger.

Sialeeds' actions are becoming more and more enigmatic and unpredictable.
Many in the Prince's inner circle have privately confided to ''The Dawn
Times'' that Sialeeds' erratic behavior is becoming a grave concern.

"Portrait of the Enemy: Dilber Novum"

Novum, who was defeated by the Prince during the siege of Stormfist,
was known as a warrior among warriors. Many, including Lord Wilde,
lamented his death. As with his friend General Luger, siding with the
Godwin faction was Novum's downfall.

However, one can understand Novum's devotion to the Godwin faction.
During the Armes invasion eight years ago, Novum's unit was so
enraged by the brutal tactics of the enemy that they deviated from
tactician Lucretia's strategic plan and charged the Armes forces.

But they soon found themselves boxed in by the enemy--only a valiant
charge by the Godwin family troops, led by Marscal, rescued Novum
and his men. From that day forward, Novum never forgot the debt
he owed the Godwin family, and vowed to do absolutely anything for
Marscal.

However, because that devotion led to his ultimate demise, 'Portraits
of the Enemy' wonders if he was satisified with his choice in the
end.

Issue 19
"Sun Palace Recaptured, Princess Rescued"

The Prince's forces have stormed the Imperial Capital Sol-Falena,
stamping out the last of the Godwin forces. During the assault,
Princess Lymsleia, who had been held captive in the Sun Palace, was
finally rescued. The long war against the occupying regime appears
to have finally come to an end.

"Lord Godwin Steals Sun Rune, Flees"

''The Dawn Times'' has learned that Gizel Godwin, pretender to the
position of Commander of the Queen's Knights, has died in battle.
Almost all remaining Godwin underlings, including Queen's Knights
Zahhak and Alenia, have also fallen in combat. The Godwin faction
is now nearly completely annihilated.

However, the remains of the occupying regime, including Lord Marscal
Godwin himself, have fled Sol-Falena and, in a cowardly and desperate
act, seized the Sun Rune and are now at large. With such a powerful
weapon still at their disposal, Falena is not yet free from the
tyranny of the Godwin Faction.

"Portraits of the Enemy: Marscal Godwin"

Now that he has lost Gizel, his only blood relative, and nearly all of
his men, we wonder what Marscal will do now. Marscal had a cousin that
he was extremely close to ever since childhood, and they continued to
be very close even into adulthood. This cousin was Mardas, the man
who married Princess Shahrewar.

And Marscal was said to have a very loving relationship with his wife,
Rosalind. But Marscal lost both Mardas and Rosalind during the
succession conflict. While these tragedies no doubt influenced
Marscal's current behavior, they are no excuse for the bloodshed
he has brought on this nation.

Issue 20
"Feitas Water Level Rises Rapidly"

In an urgent special report, ''The Dawn Times'' has learned that the
water level of the Feitas River has risen considerably, quickly reaching
dangerous and deadly heights.

According to unname sources within the Loyalist Army, it is believed that
while Marscal was making his getaway, he used the Sun Rune to melt the
Ashtwal Mountains Glacier. His Royal Highness has expressed his intention
to go there immediately and investigate.

"Yashuna Village Hot Springs Recover?"

''The Dawn Times'' has learned that Yashuna Village, whose very existence
had been threatened by an unexplained reduction in hot water volume
from its famed hot springs, has experienced a sudden, miraculous
recovery.

Business at Yashuna's once-popular hot springs inn, which had been
drastically reduced since the drop in water volume, has now
returned to normal. 'The War is over!', an unidentified inn worker
exclaimed, beaming with joy.'We're back in business!'

"Portraits of the Enemy: The Sun Rune"

The Sun Rune is one of the 27 True Runes and is also a symbol of the
Queendom of Falena. The Sun Rune, however, has revealed its frightening
side to its people. This weapon of unimaginable power is now in the
possession of Lord Godwin.

According to an investigation by Zweig and others, an inscription on
an ancient tablet gives precise instruction on how to draw out the
Sun Rune's power. Marscal apparently brought this tablet with him
to the Sun Palace.

If Marscal is still able to unleash this power, must we fight the
Sun Rune as our enemy? And can we hope to win such a battle? Many
feel that only the Prince's Dawn Rune and Lyon's Twilight Rune
can stand up to such brutal power.
